Type 2 diabetes blood sugar is the most common form of diabetes, a chronic disease that occurs gradually and then lingers on usually for the rest of a persons life. It is a condition that occurs when the body does not respond correctly to insulin. Insulin is what takes the sugar or glucose from the blood to the cell that then gets converted to energy. When you are suffering from type 2 diabetes blood sugar, then either the body stops producing enough insulin or the cells do not respond to the insulin. As a result, high levels of sugar start building up in the blood and can cause complications.

However, overweight people are not the only ones to develop type 2 diabetes. High blood pressure and genetics are also some of the other causes that may affect people with this disease. Sometimes people suffering from this may not know for a long period of time, and then suddenly find themselves passed out, in the emergency room, or going hyperglycemic. Some of the common symptoms for type 2 diabetes blood sugar are increased thirst and hunger, blurred vision, increased urination, fatigue, erectile dysfunction and slow healing of sores and infections.

To check whether you are suffering from type 2 diabetes blood sugar, there are some tests that are generally prescribed by the doctors. These include fasting and random blood sugar tests, Hemoglobin A1C test and oral tolerance test. Blood samples are taken and tested to check the glucose levels in the blood.

The most effective methods as well as the easiest are diet and exercise, simply living a healthy lifestyle can make all the difference. Once you are diagnosed, you need to take these tests frequently to monitor your blood sugar levels at all times so that you may alter you diet and exercise plans accordingly.

A healthy and a balanced diet is good for everyone but for Type 2 diabetic patients a type 2 diabetes diet plan is essential to keep their blood glucose levels in control and to reduce the risk of other complications arising in the body due to type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetic patients are prescribed medications, but those pills and shots will not be very affective if they are not supported by a proper type 2 diabetes diet plan. Since every patient has a different body weight, lifestyle and family history, type 2 diabetes diet plan will also be customized for each specific patient. There are some general rules, however, to regulating the amount of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fiber and salt that you take in your daily diet.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are an extremely important part of the type 2 diabetes diet plan. It should be taken with some amount of protein and fat. Since they are broken down directly into sugar, they affect the blood sugar levels immediately. Main sources of carbohydrates come from four food groups – fruit; milk and yoghurt; bread, cereal, rice, pasta; starchy vegetables like potatoes.

Fiber

Fiber rich foods are excellent for digestion, hence why they need to be a part of your type 2 diabetes diet plan. Fiver rich foods help in controlling obesity, blood pressure, strokes and blood sugar levels as well. They are mainly found in fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grain bread, brown rice and bran products.

Protein

Protein in the form of lean meats, non-fat dairy products, fish and skinless poultry should be a Type 2 diabetes diet plan. This should be mixed with carbohydrates during meals. About 15 – 20% of the diet in the form of protein is considered healthy for type 2 diabetic patients.

Salt

A diabetic patient is at a higher risk of having high blood pressure. Having too much of salt will further aggravate the situation. Salts and high-salt foods such as canned food, salad dressings and olives should not be a major part of the Type 2 diabetes diet plan.

Fat

Fatty foods are to be avoided when preparing a type 2 diabetes diet plan. Since diabetes itself increases the risk of heart diseases, fats, especially saturated fat, is going to add fuel to the fire. Low-fat products must be consumed and products rich in saturated and Trans fat should be refrained from as often as possible. These are found in cheese, beef, milk and vegetable oils.
